Annual Adventures at Cedar Point: A Family Tradition in the Making
Every fall, as the air turns crisp and leaves start to blanket the ground in a mosaic of autumn colors, my family and I embark on our eagerly awaited road trip from Chicago to the quaint town of Sandusky, Ohio.
It’s not just any trip though—it’s our annual pilgrimage to Cedar Point, the roller coaster capital of the world, timed perfectly with their Halloween fest, which we’ve affectionately dubbed our ‘Halloween tradition.’
There’s just SOMETHING about going there around that time of year, unexplainable but definitely something we all enjoy!
Arrival and First Impressions
One of my most favorite parts about the drive there is driving along the pathway that leads into Cedar Point. It’s a bridge that’s surrounded by Lake Erie, and the kids get so excited seeing the rides in the distance.
Upon entering the Hotel Breakers, where we stay during our visits, we’re greeted by a familiar scent—a mix of fresh lake air and a hint of nostalgia that fills the space, instantly making us feel right at home.
The lobby which underwent some major reconstruction back in May of 2015, is absolutely breathtaking. The upgrade not only preserved the hotel’s classic charm but also introduced modern amenities to enhance guest experiences.
Key updates included a redesigned main lobby and rotunda, now home to welcoming new services such as a Starbucks—perfect for guests seeking comfort and convenience.
The renovation was meticulously planned to honor the hotel’s original architectural inspiration drawn from the picturesque chateaus of France’s Loire Valley, bringing a touch of historical elegance to every corner.
A Resort Steeped in Fun and Tradition
Hotel Breakers is more than just a place to stay; it’s part of our Cedar Point experience. The hotel, with its stunning lake views and cozy fire pits perfect for chilly September evenings, offers a variety of rooms catering to families and groups of all sizes.
While the accommodation does come at a premium, the convenience and the atmosphere make it entirely worth it.
Thrills for Everyone
Cedar Point is not just for thrill-seekers eager to conquer intimidating roller coasters; it offers plenty for families too.
My kids adore the kid-friendly rides like the gentle train that chugs around the park, providing a relaxing way to take in the sights and sounds. Each visit, we make sure to try something new, but we always come back to our favorite—zip-lining across the park, which offers a bird’s eye view of the entire area.
Dining Around the Park
Within Cedar Point and the surrounding area, dining options abound. On-site, Hotel Breakers hosts a TGI Fridays, a Perkins which is known for its breakfast offerings, a Hibachi grill, Ice Cream Parlor, and a charming indoor and outdoor bar, perfect for casual meals.
If you’re looking to venture off from the hotel, a short shuttle ride can get you to the local eateries like the Bay Harbor which we stumbled upon a couple of years back, a Famous Daves bbq place, and a couple of other restaurants that we did not get to visit.
Memorable Moments
Some of our most cherished memories from Cedar Point don’t come from the rides or the food but from simple, quiet moments—like watching a breathtaking sunrise over Lake Erie, reminding us of the beauty that travel brings into our lives.
Practical Tips for Future Visitors
For anyone planning to visit Cedar Point, especially those looking to avoid crowds and enjoy a more laid-back experience, September is the ideal time. The weather is perfect for both exploring the park and relaxing by the beach at Hotel Breakers.

Our annual trips to Cedar Point have become more than just a tradition; they are a cherished ritual that brings our family together, offering a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and togetherness.
It’s a destination that truly has something for everyone, from adrenaline-pumping rides to peaceful moments by the lake, It’s the perfect go-to getaway spot, especially if you live in the Midwest!
